Uconn Women’s Basketball: An Amazing Run By: Ava Garrard
“Swish,” was the sound that the net made as one of the most talented players on Uconn’s women’s basketball team went up for a 3. Although Uconn’s players are very talented, their coach is a big part on the team’s road to victory . Uconn has made it into the record books this year because of their amazing 111 win streak, caused by their amazing players, and enforced by their great coaching (“UConn Women’s Basketball: The Huskies record 109 win streak (and counting) by the numbers”).
The coach that has led them to this string of victories is Geno Auriemma, a very talented and well experienced coach. He’s said things about his players such as, “Your philosophy in basketball will get you to a certain point. After that, you need individuals to take you to the next step.” This shows that even though he is a great coach, he still needs his players to lead him to a win. Geno really tries to rely on his older players to help guide the team. The players such as Kia Nurse have really brought the team to victory, and that’s one of the players that Geno can really trust to play her hardest (“Quotes from Geno”).
“This time of year, it's the individual player that makes the difference. The things you do as a program get you to this point. Then individuals decide the outcome of the games.”-Geno Auriemma (quotes from Geno)
A team can’t win without talented players, and Uconn has a lot of them. The players are able to win the games, whereas coaching only goes so far. These girls who put their heart and soul into basketball such as Kia Nurse and Katie Lou Samuelson have led their team to many victories by strictly following coaches orders and working hard. At Uconn it is very important to be a disciplined player and listen to coaches orders as well as play the game how they know it (“Connecticut Huskies”).
“Buzzz,” the buzzer sounded as the game ended. But all was not as it would seem, the Uconn huskies had lost a game for the first time since 2014. It was a devastating loss, however some good came of it. Uconn now has time to think about why they lost, and become a better team than ever. Every good thing has to come to an end (“Connecticut Huskies”).
