Are Veggie Chips Worth the Hype? By: Samantha Nixon For years now, scientists and food experts have been trying to find a way to make delectable snacks that aren't overwhelmed with chemicals or unhealthy ingredients. Sensible Portions is a company who has tried to meet this quo by producing an array of vegetable-based snacks that are claimed to be gluten free, non-GMO, free from artificial flavors or preservatives, kosher, cholesterol free, and made with all wholesome ingredients. However, Keri Glassman ,a writer from Today News, listed these as one of the top foods that sound healthy but are making you fat. She says “Veggie Chips aren't much healthier than regular potato chips” since they “contain mostly corn flour or potato, with small amounts of veggie powder or puree mixed in. The essential vitamins such as A and C that are found in vegetables are lost in the processing of these chips.” Does this mean that Veggie Chips are not healthy? Is the ‘veggie’ just for marketing? Keri Glassman has implyed so, but Ashley Macha ,a journalist writing from Health.com and an advocate for Sensible Portions products, says in contrast that the chips are “guilt free.” She then backs this up by stating that “38 veggie chips contain 130 calories and 7 grams of fat—30% less fat than the leading potato chip. Veggie chips and straws are also ‘flash-fried’ (as opposed to ‘deep-fried’), meaning they are fried for less than 10 seconds, versus up to 3 minutes.” So, as it turns out the “veggie” in Veggie Chips is not an entirely false statement but it does not ,by any means, replace the number of vegetables you need daily to thrive. Veggie Chips are only a little healthier alternative to the other chips on the market. Nevertheless, this is a great trend that Sensible Portions is participating in. This movement could help improve the statistic that 1 in 3 people are obese in the U.S today. (National Institute of diabetes and digestive and kidney diseases.) The more times health experts try to invent new ways to improve the ingredients that are in food today. The healthier food we will be able to enjoy tomorrow.
