“SEE YOU IN COURT, THE SECURITY OF OUR NATION IS AT STAKE!” Donald Trump states via twitter in relation to the travel ban. The newly elected president, Donald Trump, has announced several travel bans in the last few months and is looking to continue his idea. People from seven different countries will not be able to travel or immigrate to the U.S. with this ban. The ban soon made many news headlines and Judges have been disagreeing over whether or not the proposal is discrimination, but Trump will continue fighting. Trump first issued the travel ban on January 27, which banned entry into the US against Iran, Iraq, Syria, Yemen, Libya, Sudan, and Somalia for 90 days. This also means that refugees from Syria would be halted from entering the country (“Trump Travel Ban: Second US Judge Block New Executive Order”). The ban provoked a lot of protests at airports nationwide the next day. On January 28 and 29 judges from Massachusetts and New York blocked the order. Trump later claimed, "This is not about religion -- this is about terror and keeping our country safe." (Almacy & Simon) On March 6, the president issued a revised travel ban. The new ban excluded Iraq, but still included the six other countries. This one blocked people from Iran, Syria, Yemen, Libya, Sudan, and Somalia entering the US for 90 days and refugees for 120 days, which was set to begin on March 16. Hawaiian attorneys immediately filed a lawsuit for a judge to temporarily block the revised order. Then, on March 15, the travel ban was blocked by US District Court Judge from Hawaii, Derrick Watson. The next day a judge in Maryland, Theodore Chaunge, also blocked the order (Neuhauser). President Trump said that he would take the ban, "as far as it needs to go", even to the supreme court. There was a ruling on March 24 by a Virginia Court Judge Anthony Trenga who says that the revised form of his initial travel ban was altered enough for it to be legal, and that previous statements on Muslims cannot be used against Trump. The judge states, “The Court cannot conclude for the purposes of the motion that these statements, together with the President’s past statements, have effectively disqualified him from exercising his lawful presidential authority." The judge additionally states that the the president has authority by law to cut off any group of foreigners from coming into the US (Gerstein). Donald Trump has issued several travel bans. However, Hawaiian, Massachusetts, New York, and Maryland judges have blocked the bans. A Virginia judge has recently given support to the ban. Will this judge bring hope for Trump’s ban, or will the other judges prohibit it from taking place?
