North Scott annual Color Run gets kids covered in bright cornstarch as they raise money for school field trips. The run is an organized event for students and, at the end, they are given colored cornstarch to throw at each other. To add more fun for them to it, they have prizes and Kona Ice at the end. It’s a wonderful bonding experience for kids and their school, and gets kids out and moving. The color run happens annually for North Scott Junior High, organized by Ms. Wilson, the band teacher, and Mr. Hawley, the principal. This is a yearly fundraiser for the middle school, which helps raise money to give back to the students. Students must raise at least 40 dollars to participate and earn a color packet. Then, as you raise more money, they give more prizes and color packets, which is brightly colored cornstarch. This gets kids excited for the annual color run. The color run is a 1.5 mile event for students at North Scott Junior High, which is where the run is located, that the students participate in. They then run or walk it, while getting sprayed with brightly colored cornstarch by the school’s staff. Afterwards, there was a Kona Ice truck where students spent a couple bucks on a sweet treat with their friends. The total amount of money that was made from the fundraiser was $15, 700! The student that raised the most money made a total of $300, but the other students only had to raise $40 in order to participate. John Hawley, the principal of the middle school, plans to use about half of the raised money for field trips, and then the other half for items that still apply to the students. The kids got to run, color each other with cornstarch, help raise money to take themselves on field trips, and make their educational lives better. At the most recent event, September 23 of 2016, the fastest female runner was Alyssa Bockenfeld, and the fastest male runner was Max Adkinson. They got to receive a lot of Lancer gear, along with the prizes they got from raising money for the school. This lets kids get back what they donated after raising money for their school. Doing a 1.5 mile race while getting covered in cornstarch is fun for some kids, but for others it’s also fun going on field trips with all the money raised! They also then got to bond together at the end, sharing Kona Ice with their friends, and getting color packets to throw at each other! This years race was extremely successful in getting kids involved, so just think of all the kids in following years will want to do it.
