An explanation Some of you may not know what is going on with YouTube, so I will briefly explain it for you. Recently YouTube has changed their algorithm for how they recommend videos. They used to recommend videos to people based off of likes and views on the video. Now they have made it so that if the video is longer and keeps the viewer watching the video longer and not abandoning it, it is recommended to them. YouTube has also started to also take away views from private videos and previously deleted videos. How these changes affect marketersYouTube’s new goal is to get viewers to watch videos longer. This means that if a marketer makes a longer video that is more entertaining the video will be recommended to viewers. That means that they get more views and click-bait marketers get less recommendations. Not only would they get more views meaning more money, they get more subscribers. How it affects the communityYouTube has been trying to clean up their internal process for a while. This has unfortunately caused views to be removed from certain videos. Mostly deleted and private videos. One example of this is with the Universal Music Group. This group lost 2.5 billion views at the end of 2012. They also have sometimes even removed subscribers from channels if they are inactive in the channel. This is not as common as losing views but it does sometimes happen. How this will affect YouTube in general. A lot of youtubers have been complaining that they have been losing viewers and even subscribers. Pewdiepie for example complained at 50 million subscribers that his view count dropped dramatically and he was going to delete his channel. Also, a fellow gamer to Pewdiepie Sean William Mclaughlin, whose YouTube name is “Jacksepticeye” was noting that he had heard from friends and subscribers that they were being unsubscribed from channels due to a time of online inactivity in the channel. He said this has never happened to him but it was coming up frequently enough. He said that YouTube was promoting “questionable tactics to drive up engagement.” “It will create a mutiny within the actual youtube sphere itself and I’d really hate to see that happen,” said McLoughlin. Conclusion Nowadays YouTube and other things are such a great part of our lives, that we have forgotten what goes into these things. There are algorithms in almost everything now and it is really hard to keep things going well. Over time new things come up and we have to adapt to them. This may be why certain companies do things we don’t like. They are trying to keep the company going with minimum problems, so they change the algorithm to make it better. We aren’t always perfect so they will make mistakes like removing views from videos, but they will eventually fix it. |
