Laser Eye Surgery is Changing Lives Forever By: Samantha Nixon Around 34 billion U.S. dollars are spent each year in the eye care market. On top of that many forms of eye wear cause infections and major discomfort. That is why countless people are considering laser eye surgery. The procedure would enhance their vision and prevent the use of pesky eye wear.
Eye care in the U.S has an astounding representation. One notable example is laser eye surgery. This is one of many breakthrough eye correction options that has steadily been increasing in popularity since its invention in the 1970s. One of the best local eye unions that provide laser eye surgery is Eye Surgeons Associates. They have surgeons specially trained in Lasik. According to allabouteyes.com ( a site dedicated to eye correction options ) described Lasik as ¨a surgical procedure that uses a laser to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and/or astigmatism. During LASIK, a thin flap in the cornea is created using either a microkeratome blade or a femtosecond laser.¨ Then a lens is inserted to the eye in which works as a sort of permanent contact.
There is a patient who attended an Eye Surgeon Associates institution in Rock Island and had quite a unique experience with Lasik. This patient ,who has asked to remain untitled, said that her different experience started when she was approved by an ophthalmologist who initially qualified her for the surgery. However, she went to a surgeon for a second qualification. This surgeon came with a vaguely different response. The surgeon told her that she had a slight more of a risk than the average Lasik patient. She was then fully aware of the possible side effects but wanted to go through with the procedure anyway. The day she came in for the surgery she entered a small waiting room. ¨ I had some nerves but for the most part I was ready. After being escorted into the operating room I was explained exactly what the surgery was going to consist of. Soon after, the surgery began. During the procedure I was awake. So, I needed to stay very still. My eyes were propped open and numbed with drops. The surgery began when two slits were placed in my cornea. A lens was then placed between the slits. Here is where the slight more of a risk started to imply. Suddenly my cornea started to slip. This would end up causing scarring, luckily below my vision. In the end, the procedure itself wasn't to bad but extreme dryness was a side effect, I still deal with today. I would say that because this was an expensive program that caused me pain. I would only recommend it to individuals with a minimal risk.¨
Laser eye surgery can come with many negative side effects. So, it is your decision if those traits outweigh the positive. Nevertheless, it is a program that will continue to grow and provide huge improvements to the well being of the vision impaired on a local and national scale.
