As Terry Teachout for the Wall Street Journal stated, “‘Hamilton’ is the most exciting and significant musical of the decade.” He’s not wrong. The Tony-award winning musical is one of the biggest Broadway blockbusters since ‘Wicked.’ The musical, highlighting the life of Alexander Hamilton, brings unique music to Broadway and makes an unbelievable amount of money that goes to many people. First of all, the musical’s main character is Alexander Hamilton, played by the creator Lin-Manuel Miranda. Hamilton was one of The Founding Fathers who established the United States of America after the Revolutionary War. The musical is a story of his life and the things he did. According to the Hamilton Broadway website, the musical features characters like George Washington, Eliza Hamilton, Thomas Jefferson, and Aaron Burr. It starts off promoting Hamilton’s early life as an orphan in the West Indies until he makes his way into the American colonies. There, he goes through many adventures, like becoming a Founding Father. At the end of the play, Hamilton is shot by Aaron Burr, as stated by the Hamilton Musical News Website. On a different note, the music style throughout the show is fairly new to Broadway. The Rolling Stone website says, “The show, almost entirely sung-through, transforms esoteric Cabinet debates between Jefferson and Hamilton into riveting, delirious rap battles.” The rap songs throughout the musical definitely grab attention. The songs that aren’t rap battles have a new hip-hop feel. This new style is definitely a big part of the musical. Lastly, how much money does ‘Hamilton’ make? The New York Times says that the musical makes approximately $1.9 million a week- just from Broadway ticket sales! This means that ‘Hamilton’ would earn close to $100 million dollars every year from their ticket sales. The week of June 5, 2016, a ticket usually cost around $172. The musical also makes near $15 million from merchandise. All of this money is spread between many people, too. The New York Times also wrote that the producers and investors of ‘Hamilton’ get about $31 million per year. In addition, Lin-Manuel Miranda (‘Hamilton’ creator) gets about $6.4 million per year, the creative team gets about $6.5 million per year, performers get about $312 thousand per year, and friends/family get about $3.7 million per year. As you can see, ‘Hamilton’ is one of the biggest Broadway blockbusters of its time, featuring Alexander Hamilton’s life, having a unique and enjoyable style of music, and making a lot of money that goes to several different people. The musical has been on Broadway for around a year now, and is still a hard ticket to get. At this pace, ‘Hamilton’ could make history as the biggest money-making musical- they would pass $1 billion dollars in ticket sales in just a decade! There’s no reason why ‘Hamilton’ couldn’t break more records in its time. ‘Hamilton’ is an amazing musical, with an amazing amount of money. This can help with more than people may think.
