The countries of Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, and Egypt have lots of refugee camps to keep up with the steady influx of people from Syria. People are fleeing Syria because of a civil war that has moved to Iraq. Up to 4.8 million have fled but there are about 6.6 million still in Syria, and the US has now brought in 10,000 Syrians into the country. Even though they left the country they are still living in poverty, they are living on the streets, while at the same time, it is getting harder to leave Syria. “The Obama administration will reach its target Monday of resettling 10,000 Syrian refugees by October 1” said National Security Adviser Susan. We now have 10,000 Syrian people in the country ,more than a month ahead of schedule. Getting out of the country is getting harder and harder, and some refugees are paying $100 or more a person to be smuggled over the Jordan river. Meanwhile there are people bribing officials to get past armed checkpoints. Four out of 5refugees are struggling to make a living.Life in Jordan is so bad that some people have gone back to Syria. While some people in Jordan pick tomatoes for $11 a day, in the U.S, most get twice that much a hour!“Up to 15 per cent in Jordan, for example –were suffering from long-term medical conditions such as diabetes, heart disease and cancer, and left because they were no longer able to get adequate health care at home”. UNHCR United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. "’Almost half of all Syrians have now been forced to abandon their homes and flee for their lives. One in every eight Syrians has fled across the border, a million more than a year ago. A further 6.5 million are displaced within Syria, andover half of those uprooted are children,’ UNHCR”. A Lot of families went from town to city to town before deciding to leave. One person moved 20 times before deciding to leave! Even thoughthere is a war going on, they are living in poverty, and it is getting hard to leave the country, the refugees are still, hopefully, finding a better life.
