National Walk Your Dog Month By: Kate Andersen January is National walk your dog month. This month people across the world are going out and moving with their dog in order to get them fit and happy. Most people across the world are to lazy to take their dogs on walks. This can cause major health problems for both people and their dogs. This month could change the game for a lot of people and their furry friends. In the U.S. more than 35.7% of people are obese and, 57.9% of american pets are obese. This is a growing issue as it can be fatal for both people and their dogs. That is why this month could be a huge month for for people. This can also be fun for people. Dogs need this exercise to extend their lifespan greatly. Most people have a New Year's Resolution to get fit and exercise. To most this sounds like painful torture that is completely unenjoyable. But, if you bring your dog along, it will be fun. Dogs are miracle workers. But, since this month is January and in most places it is very cold outside. Most definitely do not take your dog out if it doesn’t react well to cold weather. If your dog is a toy the snow may be too deep for them and if you have a dog with thin hair or fur, make sure you give them extra layering. Some dogs will need a dog sweater in the face of cold weather. If your dog has thicker hair like that of a husky, they most likely don’t need any sort sweater. Likewise, if your dog has thin fur or hair like a Italian greyhound it may need a sweater. If you live in an area that is very icy and there is loads of salt of the ground, your dog may also need booties. Now some dogs absolutely will NOT accept booties. If this is your dog do not try to force them into dog clothes. Maybe just ditch the clothes and go without or exercise them inside. You can do this by playing with them and making them run around. What is truly important is that your dog gets active however you do it.Another great reason to get out and walk your dog is it is great for socialization. Many dogs don’t know how to act around other dogs if they don’t have any canine housemates. Taking your dog out on a daily basis can greatly help their socialization skills for when it really counts. All in all, this month is going to be very important for dogs and humans alike. If you and your dog walk at least once a day you will find yourself feeling happier and healthier. If you are sitting right now, you should take your dog and head outside to get active and have fun. Just think you may now have something to look forward to in January. So get out there and, WALK YOUR DOG!
